2016 Wedding Trend Forecast

2016 is filled with many fabulous wedding trends. We are excited to see the following, 15 trends, especially in Hawaii, this year. Thank you to Paperless Post for inspiring us to compose this blog.

1) Alternatives to wedding cake or a more decadent cake flavor selections. We see towers of donuts or donut holes, malasadas, cupcakes, and macarons,  as well as displays of pies and cheesecakes replacing the wedding cake tradition. Couples who have the wedding cake are getting more creative with the wedding cake flavors, like red velvet, coconut with lilikoi, fruit flavored fillings, carrot cake, etc.

2) Personalized Details: Incorporating personalized details into the wedding is very important for 2016. Every couple wants their wedding to represent their personalities and personal tastes. They want their wedding to be unique from the others. These details make for important photo ops, especially to get their weddings featured on sites such as The Knot, WeddingWire, Style Me Pretty, Borrowed and Blue, etc.

3) Bold colors. We are seeing various shades of blue combined with orange hues, orange shades combined with various shades of pink. Purple is still popular, but the other color combinations are definitely growing in popularity. Greens and yellows are often accent colors. Blue shades are often called turquoise, navy, cobalt, aqua, ocean blue, sky blue, aquamarine, eggshell, pastel blue, serenity, and teal blue. Orange shades include mandarin, tangerine, burnt orange, apricot, peach, coral, papaya, pumpkin, melon, and vermilion. Various pinks include Light Pink, Hot Pink, Magenta, Champagne Pink, fuchsia, cotton candy, bubblegum pink, watermelon, rose pink, rose quartz, mauve, pastel pink, fruit punch, blush, ballet slipper, rouge, taffy, pink lemonade, and sherbet. It seems that every wedding is going to have a metallic accent color, most likely a shade of gold. Antique gold and rose gold are very popular.

4) Guest Experience: Ensuring a fun guest experience is very important for weddings in 2016. Couples make sure they hire great entertainment, provide delicious and plentiful amounts of food and beverages, and keeps them busy with activities like a photo booth or games. Greeting the guests with a drink upon arrival, providing food and beverages during the cocktail reception, maybe even a late night snack are all appreciated details. Incorporating the guests in the wedding, like collecting their favorite songs and playing them during the wedding, or displaying photos of them with the couple at the wedding, are ways to make them feel special.

5) Wood: Wood furniture for the wedding is very popular. Farm wood dining tables, wooden benches, tree slices, wooden chairs, and more. Tree branch décor, wooden floral boxes, and wooden dining canopies will be huge.

6) A lot of lighting: Whether it be candles, café lighting, fairy lights, vintage bare bulbs, colored uplights, spotlights, or chandeliers, lighting creates atmosphere. Every couple wants an amazing atmosphere to wow and impress, as well as create the mood, preferable a romantic one. They are typically spending more than before on lighting packages.

7) Non-traditional floral décor: Couples are allowing florists to get creative with their arrangements. While seasonal and local flowers are going to be popular on the mainland, those flowers are all imported to Hawaii. The local flowers for Hawaii are very tropical and harsh looking, and not commonly used in many of the popular arrangements that attract most brides. Tables will have multiple arrangements, not just one. There may be different types of vases and a variety of foliage, florals, succulents, and other natural elements incorporated. In fact, there may not be a centerpiece at all…there may be a floral or leafy table runner! Foods and herbs may also be incorporated into the décor for 2016.

8) Locally Sourced Food/Farm to Table: The fresher the ingredients, the better. So many chefs are going towards this movement, especially in Hawaii. Supporting the local farmers, using fresh ingredients and cooking with locally grown and sourced foods is the big trend.

9) Photo ops: Couples are looking for ways to make their photos fun and memorable, steering away from just having the typical wedding poses. Some ideas include making a heart with his fingers on the small of her back, using their hands to spell the word love, incorporating signs with fun sayings, and having the guests form a heart for the group photo.

10) Food stations: Food is very important at the wedding, and it is something that the guests will rave or complain about during the event. Couples are opting more for the action stations and not just a buffet or plated meal. Variety of foods, the ability to roam around to select your food, and incorporating locally sourced foods is very popular for 2016. Some popular stations we see in Hawaii include Bacon Bars, Teppenyaki, Sushi and Raw Bars, Taco Bars, Carving Stations, Mini-Waffle Station, and dessert stations (i.e. Gelato or Shave Ice).

11) Lace and Feather Wedding Dress detail: The runway is definitely showing dresses with a lot of lace detail or feather detail, from long sleeve to sleeveless, formal to BoHo.

12) Hair and Makeup: Loose curls, braids, unfussed hair, and boho chic hair, will continue to trend. Hair accessories other than a veil, especially hair flowers and wreaths. Natural looking makeup: There may be a darkened brow or bold color lipstick, but for the most part, brides are going towards a more natural look for makeup.

13) Camera free ceremony: Couples are opting for their guests to be in the moment and not allowing their phones, iPads, and cameras to appear in their wedding photos. Guests should be in the moment and not caught up in taking photos. Couples are not ordering digital online photo galleries from their professional photographers and sharing the photos from these galleries with their guests.

14)Patterns: Patterns and prints are occurring in printed items, wedding attire, and wedding linens. Plaids are definitely making a comeback, especially in ties. Men are having fun with their accessories, like patterned socks, ties and pocket squares. Women are wearing colorful shoes with their wedding gowns, and perhaps wearing a floral wedding gown!

15) Graphic Design: Couples are getting more into the graphic design element of their printed items for their weddings. They are designing logos, caricatures, wedding cartoons, newsletters, fancy fonts, and fancy signage. They are also incorporating the graphic design into their personal wedding web sites.
