Determine the total amount of money you want to spend on your wedding and establish the elements of your wedding that are most important to you both.

Food/Beverages, Entertainment, and a good Guest List are the MOST important elements of your wedding, so do not skimp on what will make you and your guests enjoy the evening.

Photography is SUPER important, as is Videography, as they document the memories and those special moments you may not have personally witnessed. So, be prepared to spend money on a great photographer who will properly represent your personality and the emotions of your day.
In order to learn the real prices of things, research the internet for professionals and venues IN THE AREA OF YOUR WEDDING. Look at menu prices from caterers, research estate and resort site fees, learn the food and beverage minimums, see what the various photographers are charging. Whatever you do, try to find this information without calling people…
Visit a website that will breakdown your budget into categories based on percentages you wish to spend on each item or service. If you know the price, just plug in the price. This will give you an idea of what you CAN spend based on your overall budget.
BE FLEXIBLE & REALISTIC
Once you have an idea of what you want and what things cost, create an actual, realistic budget for items and services. Consider the amount of money being given to you for your wedding and what you have as a couple to contribute to your wedding so you have an actual total to work with. Understand that you WILL exceed your budget, so give yourself a little wiggle room.
